Trailer Watch – Call of Duty: Ghosts, Saints Row IV, Killer is Dead
Every week I go around and watch game trailers, some are just awesome; others are awful but in this regular column I’ll guide you through some of the best, most interesting or worst trailers I’ve seen in the past week.
Well, let’s just jump straight in with a trailer that is bat-shit insane but also pretty cool, Killer is Dead:
Well, that sure was something. Those of you familiar with Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda 51 know that he’s about the closest gaming has to a Salvador Dali. The man is creative on a level I can barely comprehend and seems able to put out a game almost yearly that is deliberately designed to provoke a reaction out of people.
The problem is, are any of his more recent games actually any good? No More Heroes was the last Suda game I remember playing and really getting into. Lollipop Chainsaw, his effort for 2012, was disappointing at best and relied far too much on the central idea of ratcheting the exploitation horror genre up to 11. Part of me thinks that the man behind Killer 7 and the previously discussed No More Heroes is now more interested in provoking a reaction of any kind than plaudits or praise. Make a trailer that looks crazy enough and a lot of people are bound to bite, right? Right?
From the outlandishly mental to the er… outlandishly mental. Saints Row IV has a new trailer.
I’m not ashamed, Saints Row III was the most fun I’ve had with a game in ages. Sandbox games have lost their appeal for me in a huge way but in Saints Row III I didn’t care. I wanted to explore the world; Saints Row III was one of the best games of this generation, the fact that there’s more on it’s way can only be good news right? The fact that this was once DLC but has been fleshed out into a full game isn’t something to worry about, surely.
From one franchise who’s most recent installment made me giddy to one that has done nothing but disappoint in recent year. It’s the reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts
It’s more Call of Duty everyone. Modern Warfare was nothing short of a masterpiece, turning a forgettable World War 2 series into the biggest thing in games. Forget revolutionizing what we mean by online multi-player in a first person shooter, this latest installment has masks. I just can’t get excited about the newest edition of a franchise that not only doesn’t need to be annual but hasn’t been good since 2007.
The tease at the end is what intrigues me the most though; saving the big reveal for the Xbox announcement later this month is a smart idea and is a huge coup for Microsoft. The Playstation 4 reveal was a big deal however you slice it so the fact that Microsoft have gotten a Call of Duty reveal for their reveal will help level the playing field.
Call of Duty: Ghosts will sell like gangbusters even if it is borderline unplayable. Microsoft is the real winner with this trailer.
JH – Apologies for the watermarked video for Killer is Dead, I tried to find the official youtube channel for the game but had to opt for embedding from IGN as it had the least annotations. If you find an annotation and watermark free version of that trailer let me know in the comments and I will update the post and credit you for finding it.
