Review: The Hangover III

At a Glance:

A truly funny film with some unexpected turns. The funny bits that you have already seen in the adverts are shown in the first five minutes, which is great as it makes it more unpredictable. There are no dull moments, even the quiet parts of the film are funny and filled with hilarious social awkwardness. A bit darker than it’s predecessors but you’ll laugh through the insanity.

In Depth:

The film starts quickly, randomly and doesn’t waste your time easing you into the insanity. The plot is bonkers and has a few obvious holes in it, but you won’t be bothered by them as you’re too busy laughing. I would hardly call it a “conclusion” as it only concludes a scenario from the first film that we only learn about in this film (plus how can you “conclude” nights out gone wrong). What is really good is that the plot is very different from the first two films. In this film (dramatic pause), they aren’t hungover, instead the past comes back to bite them in the form of John Goodman.

Character wise Alan (Zach Galifianakis) takes centre stage with more screen-time than the others. His comedic social awkwardness is gold and means even the quieter parts of the film are filled with laughs. Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) isn’t as lovable in this installment but he is still as insane which provides the basis of much of the trouble the group are in. Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) are great but are not really given much to do in this film and seem to mainly be there to react to Alan’s antics.

You will love this nonclusion of the franchise and even after a funny finale there is still another gem waiting for you in the credits. Unlike The Hangovers 1 and 2, the scenario isn’t that funny, the comedy comes from the reactions to the various situations.

The good:

  • Not too predictable
  • All scenes have something to laugh at, no dull moments

The bad:

  • The scenario isn’t one the audience can relate to and is only loosely connected to the first film.
  • The plot is nothing to do with a hangover and has a few noticeable holes.
  • Darker theme shows the group prepared to (SPOILER ALERT) deliver a guy to be executed which isn’t really in keeping with the characters personalities.
